A 22-year-old person has been charged with murder over the death of a man in Kaitaia on New Year's Eve, police say.
Lee Rata, who was 35, died in hospital from head injuries on New Year's Day after what police described as a vicious beating.
Detective Inspector Kevin Burke told Summer Report he could not say if people at a wedding party nearby had been involved in the incident, but some of them had been able to provide information.
He said the arrested person would appear in Whangarei District Court later today.
Mr Rata is due to be buried tomorrow.
Mr Burke said police were still establishing how many people took part in the alleged attack.
