Hamilton police investigate suspicious package

11:09 am on 30 June 2015

Police in Hamilton have cordoned off a park as they investigate a suspicious package found this morning.

They say they are taking a cautious approach to the discovery which follows several other bomb hoaxes in the city in the past week.

The latest package was found by a council cleaner at 8.40am in public toilets by the Melville Football Club in Gower Park.

An explosive disposal team from Auckland has been called in to deal with the incident.

Yesterday a suspicious package was found in Melville Park and two packages were also found in Gower Park last week.

Police said it was too early to say whether today's discovery was linked the other three items.

They said that in the earlier incidents the packages were proven to be harmless, and did not pose a risk to the public, but it had wasted the resources of emergency services.
