A panelbeating business in Dunedin has been destroyed by fire along with many classic cars inside.

The fire in the Bodyline Collision and Paint auto repair shop on Wharf Street in central Dunedin broke out shortly before 9pm yesterday.

Crews from seven fire engines fought the blaze through the night.

About 25 cars in the workshop were destroyed.

Fire Service senior station officer Mark Leonard said it was was too dangerous to enter the building so the focus was on stopping the fire spreading to surrounding businesses.

He said there were many explosions from paint, gas and vehicle fuel tanks, including those of cars being restored.
