A strong earthquake struck the Lee Stream, Middlemarch area near Dunedin.
The quake hit just before 11:20pm on Monday.
The jolt was originally recorded by Geonet as a 4.3 magnitude earthquake, but was upgraded to 4.7 on the Richter scale.
There have been no reports of damage.
