A new Cook Strait ferry has arrived in Wellington.

The Strait Feronia, which is owned by Strait Shipping, sailed into the capital today, following a 45 day journey from Sweden where it had been running services to and from Germany.

The vessel will replace the Santa Regina on the run between Wellington and Picton from late June.

Strait Shipping said the ferry had undergone a major upgrade ahead of its new role.

Managing Director Sheryl Ellison said the ship would complement services run by its other vessel, the Straitsman, and was perfectly suited to meet the growing demand for freight and passenger space across the Strait.

"It's great to have her finally arrive in New Zealand, ready for service after a major make-over and a very long journey."
