One dead after crash near Te Puke

1:55 pm on 30 May 2015

One person is dead after a collision between a logging truck and a car on State Highway 2 near Te Puke.

Emergency services were called to the scene between Pah Road and Rangiuru Road just after 7.30am.

The police said the road was now open again in both directions.

It is the first road death in this year's Queen's Birthday holiday period, which started at 4pm yesterday and runs until 6am on Tuesday.

Police said a five-year-old underwent surgery at Wellington Hospital following a two-car crash near Levin yesterday evening.

Five people died during the long weekend last year but none in 2013.

Extra police officers are out patrolling roads throughout the country this weekend, and enforcing a speed threshhold of four kilometres over the limit.
