Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said Mr Gideon was 21.
A man is due to appear in Palmerston North District Court today in relation to the shooting, in the suburb of Awapuni, just before 7pm yesterday.
He has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, and further charges could follow.
Scene examinations at the house where the shooting took place were expected to continue tomorrow, Mr Sheridan said.
Police were satisfied the shooting was an isolated incident and there was no risk to the wider community, he said.
