Police have praised the actions of a quick-thinking farmer who pulled a teenager from a burning car last night.

The 17-year-old man crashed on State Highway 2, north of Ekatahuna at around 8.30pm.

The farmer who heard the crash went out to investigate and found the car on fire.

Police said the farmer was able to pull the unconscious driver from the burning vehicle before emergency services arrived.

Sergeant Glenn Ryan said the farmer's risky and heroic actions undoubtedly saved the young man's life.

The 17-year-old is in Palmerston North hospital in a stable condition.
