Murder charge after shooting in East Cape

5:15 pm on 17 February 2015

A 30-year-old man has been charged with murder after a man was shot dead in what police say was a gang-related shooting on the East Coast.

The 50-year-old was killed at a property on the main street in the small settlement of Te Araroa last night.

The police said the victim arrived at the property with five or six other men just after 7pm, and shots were then fired.

Armed police were called when two men ran into nearby bush carrying firearms.

One man later gave himself up to police and the second man was found early this morning.

The police said a 30-year-old would appear in the Gisborne District Court on Thursday charged with murder.

They said a 32-year-old was facing a charge of recklessly discharging a firearm, and would appear in court next Monday.

Detective Inspector Rob Jones said the incident involved gang members and associates.
