Court murderer denied parole

A man convicted of murdering his former partner and mother of his three children in the foyer of the Palmerston North courthouse has been denied parole.

John Harold La Roche, 69, is serving a life sentence for stabbing and killing Margaret Bennellick while she waited in the court foyer in 1998.

He lost an appeal against his conviction and has failed in repeated attempts to get parole.

La Roche claims that at the time of the killing he was poisoned by paroxetine which he had been prescribed for depression.

The Parole Board decision said that indicates he does not have a mental illness and his issues are due to his personality.

It said La Roche has not addressed the causes of his offending and refuses to do so.
