Bad weather has interrupted the underwater search for a diver missing since yesterday morning off Motunau Beach, in North Canterbury.

The 37-year-old woman was last seen in 10 metres of water but the search is being hampered by poor visibility.

A Canterbury police search and rescue spokesperson said the police national dive team returned to shore at about 1pm after weather conditions made it unsafe for them to continue.

The five police divers did manage to complete two searches. starting from the woman's last known position.

They said visibility underwater was no more than one metre.

The underwater search will resume tomorrow if the weather improves.
