A 17-year-old girl has been rescued from the Waikato River in the Hamilton suburb of Fairfield this morning.

Police said they were alerted after someone heard screams for help coming from the river by River Road about 1am.

They said the young woman was found about 10 metres from the shore, and an officer swam to save her as she was going under.

She was brought back to shore with the help of three other police staff and taken to Waikato Hospital where she was in a serious, but stable condition.
