DHB to look into fire woman's care

6:39 pm on 27 January 2015

The Southern District Health Board is promising a full investigation into the care of a woman who set herself alight at a Dunedin petrol station yesterday.

The incident happened last night at the station on Taieri Road, only a few hundred metres from Wakari Hospital.

The 29-year-old woman has been been transferred to the serious burns unit at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital.

The Southern DHB has confirmed the woman was a voluntary patient of its mental health service at Wakari Hospital and had earlier left the ward.

A statement issued by the board called the incident tragic.

It said a full investigation would be done into the woman's care, although it was too soon to say if the inquiry would be done internally or by an external party.
