Police are looking for two men after an Ashburton man was robbed as he prepared to go on a rugby training run.

Constable Nathan Forbes said the man had parked his truck in the Ashburton river track parking area yesterday morning when he was approached by two men who asked him for a smoke.

Mr Forbes said one of the men hit him in the face, knocking him to the ground, where he was kicked in the ribs and stomped on.

The robbers are understood to have taken his cellphone and $700 in cash from his wallet.

Both assailants are described as Polynesian and in their mid-20s.
