Drivers stuck after molasses truck crashes

12:11 pm on 13 January 2015

Motorists are facing a sticky situation in the Coromandel Peninsula where a truck carrying molasses has crashed on a holiday highway.

Police said the truck and trailer rolled on State Highway 25 between Tairua and Whitianga.

The driver suffered minor injuries.

Police said the crash would affect motorists travelling to places like Hahei, Hot Water Beach, and Whitianga, and are advising drivers the quickest route to those areas is now through Thames.

Only one lane was likely to be open for several hours, and the police said it would then close entirely for an hour while they cleared the road.

No diversions were possible, and there was a lengthy tailback.
