The Interislander ferry Arahura's 2.30pm sailing from Picton to Wellington this afternoon was delayed an hour and a half by an electrical fault.

KiwiRail said the fault was in a back-up system that operated the ship's fire escape doors and fire alarms.

It said the hold-up was likely to delay other sailings today.

KiwiRail announced in December that the Arahura, which celebrated its 50,000th crossing of the Cook Strait in June 2014, would be replaced by the Stena Alegra in mid-2015.
