Police are warning New Year festival-goers on their way to Rhythm and Vines near Gisborne to expect heavy traffic and to drive sensibly.

Three cars were written off after a festival-goer collided with a police car, which then hit another car.

The annual festival starts tomorrow at Waiohika on the outskirts of Gisborne, while its sister festival BW began in Gisborne City yesterday.

Police said thousands of people from around the country have been streaming into the city.

They said the two festivals brought about 20,000 extra people into the area.

Inspector Sam Aberahama said the police would be out in force on the highways in the build-up to New Year, but central Gisborne would also be in for some attention.

He said one Auckland youth did not make it to the BW Festival after a collision with a police car, which then hit another car.

All three vehicles were written off but no-one was injured.
