Financial probe at Dunedin Council

6:30 am on 7 June 2014

The Dunedin City Council has called in financial investigators after an internal review found irregularities in two departments.

The investigations are into CitiPark, which runs council carparks, and CitiFleet which manages the council's vehicles.

The council is giving few details of the investigation, but said it called in the accountancy firm Deloitte this week after finding accountancy practices which need to be looked at by independent eyes.

Combined, the departments spend about $5 million a year.

The council's communications manager, Graham McKerracher said the investigation was expected to take several months to complete.

The investigation follows the death, two weeks ago, of Brent Bachop, the long-standing team leader at the two departments.

His death has been referred to the coroner.

The council said it would inappropriate to say if Mr Bachop is being investigated.
