Fences looked at after seal attack

Ways to prevent seal attacks will be discussed on Tuesday afternoon after a New Plymouth man was bitten on a coastal walkway during the weekend.

Arthur Lester, 85, suffered a torn calf after a furseal lunged at him during a walk on Saturday.

Department of Conservation spokesperson Darryn Ratana said warning signs and fences as possible solutions would be discussed with the local council on Tuesday.

He said people who encounter seals should give them a wide berth or call the department if they are blocking the path.
