Motorists warned after crashes

Police are warning motorists in Northland to slow down and keep a safe distance from other cars after a spate of wet-weather crashes.

The crashes started on Thursday when road surfaces became slippery with the first serious rain in weeks, and a number of people have been injured.

Police said they had attended six crashes in just two hours on Friday and did not want to see any tragedies.

In Opua in the Bay of Islands, signs were put up to warn drivers of the treacherous conditions after a car spun out of control and went over a bank following several crashes in the same spot.
