The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says it will protect its workers and the public when the demolition of earthquake-damaged homes on the Port Hills begins on Monday.
The authority describes the demolition work on properties prone to rockfall and cliff collapse as complex and challenging.
Chief executive Roger Sutton said this kind of work has led to the death of workers overseas but that will not happen in Christchurch.
Mr Sutton said a variety of tools will be used, including aerial drones to take images of the sites, large water-blasters and controlled explosives.
Freight containers will be on site to act as safe zones for the workers, escape routes will be identified, and spotters will watch for signs of rockfall, he said.
