Alternatives to East-West Link sought

3:49 pm on 5 December 2013

Auckland Transport has proposed four possible routes for the $1 billion East-West Link through Otahuhu and Mangere, which some residents say could destroy up to 500 homes.

A meeting of the council's infrastructure committee on Wednesday voted to ask the transport agency to consider options that don't involve major roads and consult thoroughly with the public.

A spokesperson for the Mangere Catholic Parishes, Teresa Ah Wa, says despite calls to look at alternatives, she is not confident that communties will be consulted.

She believes the current proposals are violating people's rights, and parishioners fear the worst for the community and schools in the area.

A petition against the link with 4000 signatures was presented to Parliament on Tuesday.
