Giraffe to be transported through city streets

11:40 am on 15 April 2013

A giraffe will be driven through central Auckland at about 5pm on Monday en route to the port for shipping to Australia.

The three metre animal, named Nakuru, is being sent from Auckland Zoo to become part of a breeding programme in Melbourne.

Zoo team leader Nat Sullivan said the shift has required extensive preparation, including placing Nakuru in quarantine for the past month.

The ship will depart for Australia at around 8pm.
