Prime Minister John Key says the New Zealand Government will work with whoever is Australia's leader after a vote in Canberra next week.

Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Wednesday announced a ballot for the Labor Party's leadership will be held on Monday.

Ms Gillard says she expects that outgoing Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, who resigned from the post on Wednesday, to run against her.

John Key says he has had a good working relationship with both Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd.

Mr Key says he will work with whoever wins the ballot and hopefully continue to have an outstanding relationship.
