Parliament congratulates the Queen on Diamond Jubilee

Parliament has congratulated the Queen on her Diamond Jubilee.

Queen Elizabeth acceded to the throne 60 years ago on 6 February 1952.

Prime Minister John Key told MPs the Queen has a great care and concern for this country, and has done a wonderful job as the Monarch of New Zealand.

Labour Party leader David Shearer says discussion about New Zealand's links to the monarchy is inevitable, but he says that is a debate for another day.

He says the Queen's reign has been one of unwavering commitment and dedication to service.

Green Party MP Kennedy Graham says the Queen has shown dignity and grace as well as genuine interest in New Zealand.

However, he told Parliament the time will come when her role as Head of State will be debated.
