Maori Party leaders may change by 2014

The Maori Party has indicated its leadership is likely to change before the 2014 election.

Tariana Turia and Pita Sharples were both reselected as co-leaders on Wednesday, but they are to retire at the next election.

Dr Sharples says he does not want to step down as co-leader during this term, but says if it turns out there is a good opportunity for his colleague Te Ururoa Flavell to step up, then that might happen.

Mrs Turia has indicated she could pass over her ministerial roles to Mr Flavell.

Prime Minister John Key says he would be happy to work with any of the three current Maori Party MPs as ministers in his Government.
