Brash calls for NZ to re-engage with Fiji

8:17 pm on 23 September 2011

ACT Party leader Don Brash has called for New Zealand to change its stance on Fiji and re-engage with its Pacific neighbour.

Fiji was suspended from the Pacific Islands Forum into 2009 after failing to convince regional leaders it was on track to hold democratic elections in a timetable acceptable to the forum.

Dr Brash says the current policy is driving Fiji away from its traditional Pacific friends and isolating the country is not helping it towards constitutional reform.

He believes New Zealand should change its position and push for Fiji to have its membership in the forum reinstated.

Dr Brash says this would allow New Zealand and other Pacific nations to constructively encourage Fiji to achieve democracy.
