New Zealand First has selected scientist and outdoor recreation advocate Hugh Barr as its general election candidate for Ohariu.
The seat is held by United Future leader Peter Dunne.
Hugh Barr has been a spokesperson for Outdoor Recreation New Zealand and most recently fronted the Coastal Coalition which was vocal in opposing the Marine and Coastal Area Bill.
Outdoor Recreation and United Future contested the 2005 general election in partnership, but the alliance fell apart the following year.
New Zealand First has also announced that a 21-year-old student Ben Craven will be standing for the party in Wellington Central.
