Early childhood groups oppose shift in funding

The Government has been told that shifting its early childhood funding to poor families could cause more problems than it will solve.

The advice was included in submissions on a report by the Early Childhood Education Taskforce, which recommended an overhaul of early childhood funding.

Radio New Zealand's education correspondent says submissions from some of the main early childhood groups agree that disadvantaged groups need more help, but say the Government should provide new funding to pay for it.

The groups also agree poorly-performing early childhood centres should be given help and advice before they are closed.

They say such centres are often in poorer communities where early childhood education is needed most.
