10:22 pm on 12 July 2011

Legislation that removes the Television New Zealand charter has passed its final reading in Parliament on Tuesday night.

The Television New Zealand Amendment Bill repeals the charter and replaces it with a series of statutory requirements.

It also makes contestable the pool of taxpayer money that used to be available to TVNZ as the state broadcaster.

The bill passed by 64 votes to 56 with the support of National, ACT and United Future.
