MPs to visit boarding houses during inquiry

9:59 am on 11 May 2011

Members of Parliament are to visit boarding houses in some of New Zealand's poorest areas as part of a Parliamentary inquiry due to be announced at midday on Wednesday.

But a Radio New Zealand political reporter says the investigation by the Social Services Select Committee falls short of calls by Labour for a wider inquiry into homelessness.

The committee will examine reportedly squalid and overcrowded conditions at some boarding houses.

It will also hear information from the public and those involved in the housing sector.

Boarding houses have been regulated since Parliament passed the Residential Tenancies Act last year.

The committee will consider whether the new law is helping the most vulnerable people.
