New Zealand political leaders welcome Bin Laden death

8:55 pm on 2 May 2011

The Prime Minister and the Labour leader have welcomed the news of Osama Bin Laden's death.

Mr Key says the world is a safer place without Osama Bin Laden and the families who lost loved ones as a result of the terrorist actions master-minded by the al Qaeda leader may well feel justice has been achieved.

The Labour Party leader, Phil Goff spoke to reporters just as the news of Osama Bin Laden's death was being reported by the US media on Monday afternoon.

He said he had "zero tolerance" for terrorists who killed innocent people in pursuit of their ideological goals.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Wayne Mapp says that while the death of Osama Bin Laden is an important gain in the fight against terrorism, there is still work to do, including for the New Zealand defence personnel in Afghanistan.
