Greens call for inquiry into Afghan prisoner transfers

8:12 am on 24 April 2011

The Green Party is calling for an independent inquiry into a report that SAS soldiers have detained and transferred prisoners to authorities in Afghanistan, who could torture or abuse them.

A Metro magazine report suggests the SAS played a key role in arresting and transferring prisoners last year who it says were then at risk of suffering torture and abuse.

The Government says it has been assured by the Defence Force that Afghan authorities, not the SAS, detained the prisoners.

Greens' defence spokesperson Keith Locke says New Zealand faces legal action from the International Criminal Court if prisoners detained by the SAS are mistreated.

Mr Locke says SAS operations should not be kept secret after they have been completed, as it is putting the country in a sticky situation legally and morally.
