Goff urges delaying foreshore bill

4:31 pm on 7 March 2011

The Government should delay the passage of the Marine and Coastal Area Bill through Parliament, says Labour leader Phil Goff.

The bill is due back before the House this week for its second reading.

Mr Goff says the legislation is intensely divisive and there is no rush to bring it back to Parliament,

He says it should be put off for at least a month, while the focus is still on the Christchurch earthquake.

Mr Goff says debating the bill this week is another way for the Government to ram through legislation with little public scrutiny.
