Te Tai Tokerau MP Hone Harawira is hinting he may form a new political party following his split from the Maori Party.
Mr Harawira left the party on Wednesday before his membership could be cancelled by its National Council.
It followed weeks of dispute about a newspaper article Mr Harawira wrote criticising the Maori Party's relationship with the National Government and a recommendation from the the party's disputes and disciplinary committee on Tuesday that he be expelled from the party.
Mr Harawira says he will stand for re-election in Te Tai Tokerau, either as an independent or as part of a new political movement.
The Maori Party will not stand against him in the seat, and in turn Mr Harawira has agreed not to contest any other Maori electorate.
Rumours of a new left wing political party have been circulating for months. Both former Green Party MP Sue Bradford and Matt McCarten from the Unite Union have denied there have been any formal talks.
