Defence Minister Wayne Mapp will hold talks with Australian counterpart, Stephen Smith in Wellington on Thursday.
The ministers are expected to discuss defence and security issues in the Asia-Pacific region.
Dr Mapp says both countries have a vested interest in promoting security and stability.
He says progress has been made in establishing a Pacific-focused Ready Response Force which could increase co-operation between the countries' sea and air capabilities.
