The National Party candidate for the Botany electorate by-election says he will stand down as an Auckland Council member if elected to Parliament.
The party has selected Jamie-Lee Ross.
Mr Ross, 25, says it is simply not possible to do both roles justice, and he will stand down as a councillor if elected.
He says the people of Botany deserve a full-time MP and the people of Howick deserve a full-time councillor.
Mr Ross says he never takes anything for granted in elections and will be campaigning up until the last possible hour.
