The Government is to tighten controls on a scheme which brings Pacific Island seasonal workers to New Zealand, after a review of its first year of operation.
Under the Recognised Seasonal Employer scheme, 4641 workers have come to New Zealand to work - nearly 80% of them from Pacific Forum countries.
The review - obtained by Radio New Zealand under the Official Information Act - found the scheme was generally working well but that more needs to be done to look after the workers.
Immigration Minister Clayton Cosgrove says some employers have acted shamefully and there will be changes to the scheme to require better care for workers.
