Several applicants for top Corrections job

The Government says several people have applied to become the Corrections Department's new chief executive.

Applications to replace the outgoing head, Barry Matthews, closed on 24 August.

Corrections Minister Judith Collins says speculation by a prison officers union that there is no interest in the position is wrong.

Ms Collins says she's been advised by the State Services Commission that there have been several applicants, and she says she is satisfied with their quality.

Shortlisted candidates will go before a panel led by the State Services Commissioner next month, with a decision on the successful candidate in November.
