Parliament has been told that the increased availability and reduced price of alcohol has significantly harmed Maori women.

The Alcohol Advisory Council told the Maori Affairs Select Committee that the Government should take a similar approach to alcohol as it does to tobacco.

Strategic operations general manager Gilbert Taurua said the harm caused by alcohol needs to be a higher priority in the health sector.

He said Maori drinking patterns show a large amount of alcohol is drunk over a long period of time.
