NZ MPs to observe Solomon Islands elections

Five current and two former MPs will head to the Solomon Islands as part of an international mission to observe elections in country next month.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says the election on 4 August underlines the progress being made in rebuilding a peaceful and democratic Solomon Islands.

The contingent will be led by former deputy prime minister Wyatt Creech.

Others in the group are Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi and Nick Wagner from National, David Shearer and Phil Twyford from Labour and Maori Party MP Rahui Katene, as well as former New Zealand First MP, Brent Catchpole.

They will be joined by two officials. Funding for the New Zealand team is from the Government's international aid programme.
