Housing Minister Phil Heatley says the Government is forming partnerships with iwi to develop housing.
Under the housing innovation scheme, the Government has agreed to fund four projects in Ahipara, Moerewa, Tauranga and Whakatane.
Mr Heatley says 44 homes for Maori will be built at a cost of just over $6 million.
He told Waatea News that the "beauty" of the funding was that the Government put in $1 and the iwi put in $1 plus the land, labour and other resources.
Mr Heatley said another $5 million was included in the 2010 Budget for similar schemes.
