Anti-whaling petition signed by 53,000 delivered

5:31 pm on 2 June 2010

An anti-whaling petition with 53,000 signatures was delivered to the Government by environmental groups after a rally outside Parliament today.

The groups are calling on the Government to support a ban all forms of whaling when it attends a meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in Morocco later this month.

The commission is to consider a compromise proposal that allows Iceland and Norway to continue whaling and reduces Japan's kill quota in the Southern Ocean.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says the Government's position remains the same - the elimination of whaling in the Southern Ocean at the earliest possible time.

Mr McCully will have formal discussions with environmental groups next week ahead of the IWC meeting.
