The National Party is hoping to hold on to Northcote in July's by-election, which they won by more than 6000 votes last year.
The Auckland seat became vacant after Jonathan Coleman left Parliament to take up a job heading a private health provider.
Meanwhile on the Syria air strikes, the National Party says it supports Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's condemnation of chemical warfare.
