New Green Party MP to be sworn into Parliament

9:24 am on 16 February 2010

Parliament's newest and youngest MP was to be sworn in on Tuesday.

Gareth Hughes, 28, is replacing the Green Party list MP and former co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons, who has retired from Parliament.

Mr Hughes has previously worked for Greenpeace and the Green Party. He describes himself as an environmental campaigner and says he is looking forward to making change within the Parliamentary system.

His areas of interest include climate change, transport, housing and food, and he will represent the Greens on the Transport and Industrial Relations Select Committee.

Mr Hughes will make his maiden speech next week.
