Independent advisory body urged for ETS

MPs considering changes to the emissions trading scheme have been urged to scrap the current proposal and establish an independent advisory body.

Members of the Climate Change Research Institute on Wednesday appeared before the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee, which is hearing submissions on a bill to amend the Emissions Trading Scheme.

Institute members say the proposed changes are not effective or environmentally sustainable.

They say they would prefer an independent scientifically informed advisory body, similar to one in Britain, to provide advice on the issue of climate change.

The select committee is due to report back to Parliament next month.
