Teachers fear extra sport funding will mean more work

Secondary school teachers are worried a Government scheme to invest $82 million in school sports over the next four years will create more work for them.

The Kiwisport policy will provide $45 million in direct funding to schools over the next four years with the aim of increasing the number of children participating in organised sport.

But the Post Primary Teachers Association says teachers fear the scheme will take too much time to manage.

President Kate Gainsford says schools will have to cut through "a sea of red tape" to re-organise and re-hire sports co-ordinators and coaches.

She says in theory the fund is a step in the right direction. but she's unconvinced it will make a difference at grass roots level.
