Maori Party MP Hone Harawira plans to hitch-hike around his electorate to cut down on travel costs.
The MP for Te Tai Tokerau is one of the MPs with the highest expenses in Parliament, with travel costs of nearly $67,000 in the first half of this year.
When those figures were released, Mr Harawira said he would not apologise and would not be slowing down.
However, he now says he is going to try to cut back on costs.
Mr Harawira says it is difficult to see how he can make savings, but one thing he can do is hitch-hike more often.
He says he enjoys hitching a ride, as it allows him to talk to people in a relaxed way about what is important to them.
