Network of food testing centres proposed

The Government wants to build a network of food-testing facilities across New Zealand.

Economic Development Minister Gerry Brownlee told a forum at Te Papa in Wellington the centres would help extract extra value from existing food sources by developing them into other products.

He said many companies have been unable to develop new products because there has been no economical access to food-testing facilities.

Mr Brownlee said one example is where waste from Fonterra products could be reused to create high-protein liquids.

Other targets highlighted in the speech included an overhaul of business investment programmes to target companies with high export potential, and maximising gains from one-off events such as the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
