Funding for levy on offenders in Budget

1:54 pm on 22 May 2009

A system for getting convicted offenders to pay money into a fund for victims will get $770,000 in the 2009 Budget.

Some $1.5 million left over from the scrapping of the Sentencing Council and the Justice Advisory Board will also go toward the establishment of the $50 levy.

Justice Minister Simon Power says the total of $2.3 million will establish new processes in the fines collection system.

Legislation setting up the offenders levy is due to be reported back to the House in August.

The Budget will be delivered on 28 May.
